Today, Klinsmann's thirtieth birthday, the media coverage was phenomenal. Whether you are for or against his importation into English footgall, there was clearly to be no ignoring him--indeed, it has been greeted with near-hysteria.
... As the Daily Mail reported: 'Alan Sugar pulled off English football's transfer coup of the decade...' Today newspaper blasted the story all over their sports pages. 'MR MONEY MANN: ALAN SUGAR SIGNS JURGEN KLINSMANN.' There was extensive coverage in every paper.
Ian Gibb of the Daily Mirror wrote: 'Jurgen Klisnamnn will march, or maybe tumble, into the Premier League, because he has form for diving ito win penalties and getting defenders sent off with his dying swan routine.' Manchester United's England defender Paul Parker outlined just how tough a job defenders will have to even lay a glove on him without being hauled up. 'Whenever flesh meets flesh he's down in a flash,' said the small but speedy full-back. 'You have to be like a ballerina to mark him. Dance around and hope you don't make contact. It's a case of look, don't touch with Klinsmann.'

Among the English, Klisnamnn was, with the possible exception of Diego Maradona, the greatest hate figure in world football. He was regarded first and foremost as football's supreme con-man: a man whose principal skill was for deceiving referees and winning penalties. But Spurs supporters did not worry about this.
In fact Klinsmann also has a reputation as a genuine sportsman. For example, when a Bayern Munich player was sent off for fouling him, Jurgen pleaded so much with the referee that the red card was rescinded. And despite the warlike 1990 World Cup second round match in which Holland were beaten 2-1, Klinsmann deliberately ran to Ruud Gullit to embrace him at the end. A Dutch TV man admitted: 'In Holland, people hate Germans and German soccer. We have a saying: 'There is only one good German--Jurgen Klinsmann.".'
